Conakry Coup

* Sunday evening (images added, see photos and videos below)

Via Sierra Leone I am receiving photos and videos of the coup in Guinea and the arrest of president Alpha Condé.

* [AFP, Conakry, edited YL] Military led by Mamadi Doubyoua say they have taken over power in Guinea. In a short broadcast on state television they said that they have dissolved the constitution and the government. But the defence ministry said the attempted uprising had been put down. Unverified videos shared on social media showed President Alpha Conde being surrounded by soldiers. His whereabouts were unclear. This followed earlier reports of heavy gunfire in Conakry near the presidential palace. Doumbouya is head of a special forces unit in the military. He said he was acting in the best interests of the nation of more than 12.7 million people. Not enough economic progress has been made since independence from France in 1958, the colonel said.

* Sunday afternoon

At Twitter I see several messages of a coup d'état in Guinea (neighbouring country of Sierra Leone) against president Alpha Condé, who in 2020 won a third term (stretching the maximum limit), not recognized by the opposition and sparking protests. Shots heard today in the capital Conakry.
<< #Guinea coup confirmed. Lieutenant Colonel Mamady Doumbouya's first statement says military has taken over. He claims to be in presence of President Conde. He declares constitution dissolved as well as state institutions, including government and parliament. Land & air borders closed. #GuineaCoup >>
