Mercy Ships leaves Freetown

Erik Beerlage, volunteer staff at the Hope Center of Mercy Ships in Freetown, Sierra Leone sends this message on WhatsApp:

After 10 months of field service the mission in Sierra Leone has come to a closure. The ship will leave for the annual maintenance in Tenerife next week. And I fly out today in a couple of hours to start a big break. The time here in Freetown has absolutely flown by. My first destination wil be The Gambia. I think that a bit of processing of this experience will do me some good. So that’s the objective!

The Global Mercy is closing its operating theatres and hospital, marking the completion of her inaugural full-length field service, the culmination of many years of preparation, and 10 months of committed service from her dedicated crew and day crew. Many crew will now depart the ship, either to rest before the next field service or because their service has reached completion.

During the Global Mercy’s field service, 1,728 patients received 1,979 surgeries. 173 medical students and working professionals received 15,478 hours of mentoring and education on board as well, great strides in our efforts for Education, Training, and Advocacy.

Erik adds: Some of the experiences you will find in the little clip linked. The Hope Center definitely has always a lot going on. This was in a span of 1 or 2 weeks.
