Does Sierra Leone police provide enough protection?

The Hague District Court:
Asylum application of Sierra Leonean musician insufficiently motivated rejected

The Hague, May 27, 2025 – The Hague District Court ruled in an interim judgment on May 13 that the rejection of the asylum application of a musician from Sierra Leone was insufficiently motivated. The man says that after the mysterious death of his girlfriend he was abused and threatened by her family and he fears persecution and violence from both fellow villagers and authorities upon his return.

The man went to Liberia with his girlfriend and his manager to record a video clip for his upcoming new music. Afterwards they went home and the next day it turned out that his girlfriend, who was in bed with him, had died. There is no evidence of a violent death, but it is unknown whether an autopsy was performed. The girlfriend's family is angry and attacked and abused him. He was then taken to the Chief for judgment, but he managed to escape and left Sierra Leone. Afterwards, the girlfriend's family distributed a video message in which they threatened him.

The Immigration and Naturalization Service (IND) considers the asylum applicant's statements credible, but believes that he can seek protection from the police in his country. A key question posed by the judge is whether the police in Sierra Leone, in this country plagued by corruption and poverty, can provide sufficient protection. The court concludes that it has not been sufficiently substantiated why the musician does not run a real risk of inhuman treatment upon return. The position that he could settle elsewhere in the country was also judged to be insufficiently substantiated. The man is known in the country as both a musician and a footballer and therefore cannot easily avoid attention.

The court gave the Minister of Asylum and Migration eight weeks to remedy the flaws in the decision.
